You’re going about your day when your phone buzzes with a new message: “Are you still coming over for pot roast tonight?”
You pause. Pot roast sounds great, but you don’t recognize the number (or remember making any dinner plans). Instead of ignoring it, you reply, “Who is this?”
That’s exactly what scammers are hoping for.
These seemingly friendly, accidental invitations are a common trick to get you to engage. Scammers may try to keep the conversation going, gradually building trust before asking for money, pitching fake investment opportunities or sending malicious links. They might also try to collect personal details that could help them access your accounts.
What should you do?
- If you get a text from an unknown number, especially one that seems random or out of place, it’s safest to ignore and delete it.
- Never click on links or share personal information with strangers.
- Block suspicious numbers to prevent further contact.
A surprise pot roast invitation from a stranger might sound harmless, or even tempting, but it’s best to play it safe and keep your information secure.
