Our Fraud Team has reported an increase in fraudulent text messages claiming recipients have unpaid toll charges. These messages are a scam and should be ignored and deleted. If there is any uncertainty, contact the appropriate state tolling agency directly using a verified phone number or website, not the contact information provided in the text.
The messages often include a link prompting recipients to provide card information to resolve supposed overdue tolls and avoid additional fees or penalties. After entering card details, victims may receive a legitimate text message from their bank containing a mobile wallet verification code. This code is part of a real multi-factor authentication (MFA) process, but the fraudster is attempting to use it to enroll the victim’s card in a mobile wallet under their control.
In some cases, the victim then receives a phone call or further instructions through the fraudulent website asking for the MFA code. If the code is shared or entered, the fraudster can complete the enrollment and begin making unauthorized purchases using the compromised card. Because these transactions often occur at local merchants, they may appear legitimate and are less likely to trigger fraud alerts.
Legitimate tolling agencies will not contact customers by text message for billing or collections and will never request payment through a link.
