Our Fraud Mitigation team is alerting customers to a scam that has recently targeted customers of other financial institutions and could become more widespread.
In these scams, criminals contact customers by phone and claim that their bank account has been compromised or that suspicious activity has been detected. During the conversation, the caller may create a sense of urgency and then direct the customer to a website link sent by text message or email.
While the website may look identical to the customer’s actual online banking site, it is a fraudulent website designed to steal login credentials. When customers enter their username and password, that information is immediately captured by the criminal, who can then attempt to access the customer’s account.
At this time, MVSB has not received reports of this scam affecting our customers. However, fraudsters often use the same tactics across multiple financial institutions, so we want our customers to be aware and prepared.
How to Protect Yourself
If you receive a call claiming to be from MVSB and you are not familiar with the individual calling, trust your instincts.
Tell the caller that you are not comfortable continuing the conversation, hang up, and contact MVSB directly using a phone number you know and trust. When you call, ask to speak with our Fraud Mitigation team.
Customers should also remember that the safest way to access their accounts is through the official MVSB mobile app or by logging into Online Banking directly from mvsb.com. Avoid clicking links sent through unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls.
